Chateau Manzanillo - Manzanillo, Mexico |
Some of the most enjoyable places in the world have yet to be discovered by the masses.
Because these areas are somewhat of a hidden secret, huge savings can be
found all around. The Chateau Manzanillo has to be one of the most affordable
rental mansions located off the beaten path. |

Travel Invasion had just recently returned from the southeastern side of Mexico along the Yucatan Peninsula when we realized we would soon be heading back down to Mexico. Only this time we would be facing west. Travel Invasion would be journeying down to Manzanillo, Mexico for a four night stay at the Chateau Manzanillo. |
Manzanillo, Mexico is situated along the Mexican Riviera coastline south of Puerto
Vallarta and to the north of Ixtapa. The city is located on the western side
of the State of Colima. Best of all though, is that Manzanillo appears to be almost entirely void of the good old USA commercialism festering worldwide. An authentic Mexican experience for adventurers. |

Travel Invasion touched down at the airport just in time for an explosive rain shower.
Immediately we noticed our driver Federico waiting to propel us into this
adventure. Loaded into a Suburban, we were headed to Chateau Manzanillo approximately
25 miles due south. |
The rain shower appeared to be slowing down as we neared the Chateau. Heading into the Bay of Santiago, Federico pointed out our mansion on the hill. A few minutes later and at a much higher elevation, we had arrived. The electronic steel gate began to roll open exposing the dramatic structure situated behind it. The courtyard was entirely floored in tile with a center fountain providing a soothing sound. We were greeted at the door by Maria the house manager. The split level entry was a great viewing point into the main living area. We dropped our bags and began to explore. |
Chateau Manzanillo is over 15,000 square feet and includes five bedrooms with four
having their own self contained bathrooms. The Grand Master Bedroom measures over 800 s.f. and has sweeping views of the Pacific as well as the Santiago Peninsula. The bath area features a his and her marble shower as well as an expansive closet area. A deck off the Master provides a great sunset viewing spot. Adjoining the Master Bedroom on the stairway is the Queen Room which offers exterior access to the Palapa patio. The other bedrooms are accessed around the exterior of this uniquely designed dwelling offering a private sleeping experience for all. |
Travel Invasion was attracted to the engineeringly challenged swimming pool which
offers indoor access. Just shoot through the tube and you are transformed
into an explosion of tropical beauty. Heading across the pool you will soon reach
the side which seems somewhat suspended in air. The Chateau Manzanillo
grounds appear to be meticulously maintained. The owner told me that they are
constantly changing certain portions of the landscape to allow for ongoing panoramic
views of the nearby ocean. Surprisingly the heat and humidity were not as extreme as we had planned, putting us in the pool much less that I had expected. Entering back into the villa's game room and living room were through any of the massive 12 foot acrched French doors. A towering stone wall borders the dining room and kitchen. An expansive rounded marble wet bar that would make any bartender delerious, proved to be a hit with the Travel Invasion crew. |
One afternoon was spent having lunch under the 5,000+ square foot palapa. The breeze flowing up from the ocean seemed to leave the area insect free. Mornings were spent constructing various breakfasts within the gourmet kitchen area. The glass refrigerator was a nice touch and also allowed us to easily monitor our food consumption. Groceries will be waiting at the Chateau at your request. Everything we had previously asked for was there waiting, including some delicious local fruit. |
Chateau Manzanillo is within walking distance to the beach although Federico Lopez,
a fluent english speaking local driver seems to be available at a moments notice.
There are a number of restaurants nearby including our favorite La Toscana
with its creative Italian and Mediterranean menu hand designed nightly by the
charming owner Francois. Other nearby recommended highlights include the Dolphy
Ice Cream stands, cheap beer, the authentic shopping areas of downtown Manzanillo,
El Caporal for an afternoon of drinks and entertainment, El Tortugario the
Sea Turtle Refuge and finally all the nice people who greeted us warmly in this
fascinating tropical Mexican destination. Travel Invasion hopes to return soon! Thanks to Mike Longley and all the staff of Chateau Manzanillo. Jeff Burgess / Travel Invasion |
Other highlights included the recently constructed Owner's Penthouse. This jungle
style room offers amazing views and a tropical motif. This room which sleeps up
to six, is offered separately or in conjunction with the main dwelling pending
availability. Maria the house manager is also available for meal preparation.
We sampled a chicken enchilada dinner and were extremely satisfied with the results.
The chateau offers full air conditioning throughout. The billiards room was well though out although for some reason my limited skills looked even worse on the tournament sized table. The glass ceiling looking into palapa area added a nice natural lighting to the room. The home seemed designed for having a good time at all times! Chateau Manzanillo was proving to be one of the most affordable mansions in the world. |
Update: The website for Chateau Manzanillo appears to be having issues. We have removed the site link until their website is working properly again. |
